Job Description
About the Role: As Senior Environment Artist, you will own environment creation from early concept and blockout through final in-engine implementation and polish. This is a hands-on role focused on building large-scale environments, landmarks, and supporting asset sets with strong composition, atmosphere, readability, and performance. You will work closely with art, design, technical art, and engineering to create performant, visually rich spaces that support gameplay and worldbuilding.
What You'll Do
- Own environment creation from early concept and blockout through final in-engine implementation and polish.
- Build large-scale environments, vistas, and landmark spaces with strong composition, readability, and atmosphere.
- Create high-quality environment assets, including modular kits, hero assets, and supporting props.
- Develop and implement complex materials and shader setups to support environment fidelity and variation.
- Translate concept art into fully realized, performant in-game environments while maintaining artistic intent.
- Take responsibility for in-engine scene assembly, layout, set dressing, and world building.
- Optimize environments for performance, memory, and scalability across target platforms.
- Define and maintain best practices for environment implementation, including asset setup, material usage, and scene organization.
- Collaborate closely with technical art and engineering to solve pipeline and performance challenges.
- Identify risks related to environment scope, performance, and production timelines, and propose solutions early.
- Contribute to visual consistency across the project by upholding and reinforcing the established art direction.
- Mentor other artists through feedback, knowledge sharing, and raising the overall quality bar.
- Be a feature owner for the Environment art team.
- (Optional but valuable) Contribute to lighting and mood creation to enhance environment storytelling.
What You Bring
- 5+ years of experience in environment art for games, with at least one shipped title.
- Proven ability to own environments end-to-end, from concept translation to final in-engine implementation.
- Deep understanding of real-time environment pipelines, including asset creation, materials, shaders, and scene assembly.
- Strong technical proficiency working within modern game engines, including debugging, profiling, and optimization.
- Experience building large-scale environments and vistas with strong composition and visual storytelling.
- Demonstrated experience creating modular environments and scalable asset systems.
- Solid understanding of performance constraints and how to optimize environments without sacrificing visual quality.
- Experience creating and implementing complex material systems.
- Ability to balance artistic quality with technical limitations and production realities.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across disciplines.
- Self-driven and comfortable taking ownership of large features or environment areas.
- Bonus: Experience with lighting in real-time environments and mood development, background in level design, experience working on open or large-scale worlds, scripting/procedural workflow experience, and ARPG game development experience.
