Senior Engineering Manager

About the Role: Medium is one of the world's most influential writing platforms. We are looking for a product-minded Senior Engineering Manager to oversee the core Medium product experience, including the reading experience, the editor, and navigation. You will lead a team of senior and staff engineers, foster long-term team health, and partner with cross-functional stakeholders to bring Medium's product vision to life.

What You'll Do

• Shepherd multi-quarter plans aligning technical work with organizational goals and product strategy.
• Own your team's hiring strategy end-to-end and build an inclusive, high-trust team culture of psychological safety.
• Lead complex tradeoff conversations balancing velocity vs. tech debt, and innovation vs. operational burden.
• Operate as a key cross-functional voice in prioritization, taking ownership of product direction without a dedicated PM layer.
• Guide the adoption of responsible AI best practices while ensuring engineers remain accountable for code clarity and correctness.

What You Bring

• Demonstrated experience leading product engineering teams with broad scope and end-user impact.
• Strong product instincts, an outcomes-over-output mindset, and a deep passion for crafting high-quality user-facing products.
• Experience with A/B testing, experimentation frameworks, and data-informed product development.
• Exceptional communication skills, leading with honesty, directness, and consistent follow-through.
• Bonus: A passion for online writing, publishing, and experiencing Medium as a user.

• Base salary range: $230,000 - $265,000 USD per year.
