THE OPPORTUNITY:
As the Lead Environment Artist for Eleventh Hour Games, you will drive the vision and execution for world and environment art while staying hands-on to build high-quality environments yourself. You’ll establish a cohesive visual standard for large-scale worlds, collaborate closely with Art Direction, Design, and Engineering, and help shape the workflows and technical foundations that allow the team to build performant, beautiful environments at scale.
This role requires understanding of modern real-time environment pipelines, large-world streaming workflows, terrain and landscape authoring, complex material systems, and procedural content workflows. The ideal candidate communicates openly in a studio environment, stays agile when priorities shift, and makes thoughtful, efficient decisions to keep production moving smoothly.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Drive the environment art vision and quality bar while remaining highly hands-on as an individual contributor
- Build large-scale environments, vistas, and cinematic spaces with strong composition, readability, and mood
- Establish and execute landscape and terrain creation workflows, including landscape materials and advanced material setups
- Leverage procedural content workflows to accelerate world building while maintaining artistic control and consistency
- Maintain lighting fundamentals for real-time environments, collaborating closely with lighting/tech art as needed
- Partner with technical art/engineering to establish performant environment and lighting workflows for large worlds
- Create and facilitate project schedules; define resource needs, workflows, and milestones in collaboration with production
- Identify project and team risks through regular monitoring of production status, team morale, and communication channels; execute early interventions and preventative measures
- Document, communicate, administer, and refine art production processes; identify opportunities for improvement and execute solutions with the team
- Provide clear feedback, mentorship, and guidance to environment artists; support hiring and team growth over time
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years of industry experience in environment art, including experience in a senior/lead capacity
- Demonstrable experience shipping games or live products, ideally involving large-scale environments or open/streamed worlds
- Experience with modern real-time environment workflows in a leading game engine (large-world streaming, terrain systems, real-time lighting, and performance optimization)
- Deep experience with landscape/terrain workflows and landscape materials, including complex material setups
- Proven experience with procedural content workflows used in production (procedural placement, rule-based generation, or scalable world-building tools)
- Grasp of real-time lighting fundamentals, even if not the dedicated lighting artist
- Experience building large-scale vistas and cinematic environments with strong composition and visual storytelling
- Experience mentoring, reviewing work, and raising the quality bar across a team
- Ability to work core studio hours (10am–4pm CST)
PREFERRENCES:
- Concept art background
- Ability to design worlds, spaces, and visual themes
- Strong drawing or visual ideation skills
