About Openly: Openly is a premium, hyper-growth insurtech pioneer rebuilding the home insurance industry from the ground up by simplifying comprehensive coverage models through cutting-edge technology. Powered by a remote-first collaborative culture, Openly leverages sophisticated data engines, advanced predictive science, and elegant software structures to deliver fast, highly customizable, and completely transparent protection options for consumers across the United States.

Position Overview

We are seeking a high-agency, technically credible Engineering Manager to lead, support, and scale our Data Engineering team. In this hybrid leadership track, you will drive our data platform’s people, projects, and processes forward—ensuring the architecture remains robust, scalable, and secure. While your primary focus is driving data culture, managing roadmaps, and mentoring talent, you will maintain hands-on credibility by writing code and optimizing pipelines during periods of peak demand to stay intimately connected with our core data systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • People & Culture Management: Lead, mentor, and advocate for a diverse squad of data engineers, mapping out transparent career goals, technical milestones, and continuous performance feedback loops.
  • Data Platform Architecture: Partner closely with Principal Engineers and cross-functional leadership to guide the strategy, scalability, and long-term evolution of our centralized enterprise data platform.
  • Cross-Functional Stakeholder Alignment: Collaborate fluidly with Data Science, Business Intelligence, and Product squads to align source-to-target data mappings and ingestion solutions with organizational objectives.
  • Pipeline Design & Optimization: Provide technical leadership regarding schema design, analytical data modeling, storage partitioning, data replication, staging, and performant batch or real-time movement matrices.
  • Hands-On Engineering Support: Contribute high-quality technical code during high-demand peak intervals to eliminate project roadblocks and assert deep technical credibility with engineering peers.
  • Governance & Quality Enforcement: Establish engineering best practices for pipeline monitoring, data governance, role-based access controls (RBAC), and strict PII data handling compliance guidelines.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 5+ years of verified professional experience in data engineering and data platform development, including 3+ years operating in a formal engineering management or technical leadership capacity.
  • Deep conceptual and hands-on expertise with large-scale data lakehouses (e.g., Apache Iceberg), enterprise warehouses (e.g., BigQuery, Snowflake), and distributed batch/real-time processing frameworks.
  • Advanced operational fluency working with modern streaming, workflow, and container orchestration tooling grids (such as Kafka, Airflow, and Kubernetes).
  • Strong development proficiency utilizing Python or similar backend languages (Java, Scala) combined with master-level SQL query writing and analytical performance tuning.
  • Direct production experience leveraging Infrastructure as Code (IaC) via Terraform to provision, version, and manage cloud data networks securely.
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud data technologies (BigQuery, Cloud Composer, GCS, Cloud Run, Pub/Sub) or closely related public cloud architectures.
  • Superb communication and interpersonal mechanics, with the polished ability to translate complex data infrastructure constraints simply to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Location Context: 100% remote work flexibility open to qualified tech leaders residing anywhere within the United States (Must hold valid U.S. work authorization).

What We Offer

  • Budgeted Base Compensation Range: $176,000 – $198,000 USD (With a maximum full scale range extending up to $264,000 USD, calibrated precisely based on localized market coordinates, qualifications, and core engineering assessments).
  • Lucrative corporate equity grants, providing a direct stake in our ongoing insurtech market disruption.
  • Comprehensive health plans covering premium medical, dental, and vision insurance portfolios.
  • Generous noncontributory 401(k) company contribution plan (Openly directly contributes 3% of your gross income, regardless of whether you personally contribute).
  • Up to 8 weeks (320 hours) of fully paid parental leave, supplemented by short-term disability leaf options for birthing parents.
  • A one-time $1,500 remote home office stipend to build an ergonomic workplace, combined with a $50 monthly Be Well well-being allowance.
  • An annual $2,000 Professional Development fund to sponsor continuing educational courses, industry certifications, and technical conferences.
