Distributed Systems Engineer (L5) - Commerce Data

Netflix, the world's leading streaming entertainment service with over 300 million paid memberships, is looking for a Distributed Systems Engineer (L5). You will join the Commerce Insights and Data Products Engineering team to build low-latency data products capable of powering algorithms and machine learning models that run across commerce and identity flows. This work directly empowers product managers to innovate on experiences that "Entertain the world."

Key Responsibilities

• System Design: Develop highly available and reliable distributed data systems and services to ensure timely delivery of high-quality data.
• ML Partnership: Partner closely with data scientists and engineers to build data products that power ML models (features, inference inputs, labels, reward signals).
• Scale & Performance: Design multi-tenant systems that can handle high-scale and high-throughput demands while being easy to operate and scale.
• Observability: Prioritize observability in designs, ensuring comprehensive monitoring, logging, and alerting for 24x7 operations.
• Agility: Work in a fast-paced environment with vague requirements, taking ownership beyond just code.

Requirements

• Tech Stack: Proficiency in at least one major language on the JVM stack (Java, Scala) and SQL.
• Big Data: Experience building applications using large-scale distributed systems and data processing frameworks (Spark, Flink, etc.) for both batch and real-time.
• ML Infrastructure: Deep understanding of how ML systems consume data and experience designing low-latency products to support personalized experiences.
• Operational Excellence: Strong operational awareness to build systems that are easy to monitor and maintain.
• Mindset: A product mindset with strong data intuition and a collaborative style.
