Applied AI Engineer (Global Remote)

Automattic, the force behind 43% of the web (WordPress, WooCommerce, Tumblr, Beeper), is looking for exceptional Applied AI Engineers. We need builders who don't just integrate APIs but create features that users love. You will work on fascinating problems at scale, shaping how AI transforms products used by hundreds of millions of people.

Key Responsibilities

• Ship AI Features: Build user-facing AI features across the ecosystem—from site-building tools to e-commerce recommendations and messaging experiences.
• Rapid Iteration: Build and iterate rapidly on AI-powered products that directly impact millions of users, moving from prototype to production.
• Collaboration: Work with PMs, designers, and engineers (asynchronously or in NYC) in a fast-paced environment optimized for innovation.
• Integration: Embed with teams working on WordPress.com, Jetpack, Pocket Casts, and Beeper to help them leverage AI.
• Stay Current: Keep up with rapid AI developments to unlock new user experiences.

Requirements

• Production Experience: You have shipped AI features that users actually use. Production experience is valued over theoretical knowledge.
• Full-Stack Skills: Strong full-stack development skills, primarily in PHP, TypeScript, and React.
• LLM Mastery: Production experience with LLMs (APIs or custom implementations) at meaningful scale.
• Product Mindset: You think product-first. You know great AI is invisible to users; it just makes their experience better.
• Autonomy: Ability to move fast without breaking things and work well in a distributed, asynchronous environment.

Nice to Have

• Developed consumer AI products that scaled to significant user numbers.
• Experience with WordPress, e-commerce, or messaging platforms.
• Open-source contributions.
• Previous startup experience as a founder or early engineer.
